Importance of Celebrating Successes during COVID-19

Now, more than ever, people are working in different ways and in different places. With the majority of people working remotely, you no longer have face to face time with those that you lead and manage.

Right now, it is increasingly important to recognize and celebrate successes with those members of your team.

Ways to celebrate and recognize success may include:

  • Sharing individual accomplishments in virtual team meetings

  • Saying THANK YOU and being specific about why you are thanking them

  • Giving small gift cards to show thanks

  • Using flexibility in schedules or paid time off to give people a break; maybe it's a half day off, a few hours, or maybe it's a a full day to celebrate a long weekend for a job well done

  • Have a quick Zoom party with your team

  • Asking members of the team to show appreciation to others or to share what they are thankful for

The amount of time and energy required to be successful in this new environment of remote work is much higher.

Checking in with your direct reports daily, even if it's just for a few minutes of conversation find out how they're doing, both at work and outside of work, asking if they have what they need as far as resources and technology, and asking how you can help them are important ways to show empathy and appreciation for the employee's contributions.

Going back to quick telephone calls is also a great idea. These quick calls for checking are important, as people are becoming burnt out from video calls.  There is such a thing as Zoom fatigue!  Check out this article from BBC.

Remember that people are trying very hard to balance work responsibilities along with family needs, whether serving as a teacher to younger children or providing care to elderly parents. Others may be facing periods of loneliness. Acknowledging these added stressors when showing appreciation is an authentic way to lead! Practice empathy and continue to show gratitude with those you lead!
