8 Benefits of Partnering with a DEI Facilitator: Demystifying the Role of DEI Facilitators: A Guide for CHROs, CEOs, and ERG Leaders

As the landscape of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) continues to change, organizations and businesses are recognizing the pivotal role of DEI facilitators in driving meaningful change. For CHROs, CEOs, and ERG leaders, understanding the essence of a DEI facilitator is key to fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

Defining the DEI Facilitator Role: A DEI facilitator is an expert in guiding conversations, workshops, and initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This skilled facilitator acts as a bridge between different perspectives, creating a safe and constructive space for open dialogue. DEI facilitators possess a deep understanding of cultural competence, power dynamics, team dynamics, and the complexities of systemic bias. Their role extends beyond mere moderation; they actively steer conversations toward actionable outcomes and growth.

One example that I can share of being a bridge, is when I was consulting with a client to support the launch of their DEIB council and the women’s employee resource group suggested adding hygiene products to women’s restrooms at the company bathrooms. When the DEIB council and I became aware of this idea, I suggested that they add hygiene products to ALL restrooms, regardless of gender to support the inclusion of all employees. This was the DEIB council’s first public offering, as well!

8 Benefits of Partnering with a DEI Facilitator

  1. Objective Insights: DEI facilitators bring an external, unbiased perspective that can uncover blind spots and offer fresh insights.

  2. Safe Spaces: Their expertise creates an environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their experiences and perspectives.

  3. Structured Conversations: DEI facilitators structure discussions to ensure everyone's voice is heard, and the conversation remains respectful and focused.

  4. Learning Opportunities: They provide education on DEI topics, helping participants expand their awareness and understanding.

  5. Action-Oriented: DEI facilitators guide conversations towards tangible action steps, ensuring initiatives are effective and impactful.

  6. Customized Approach: Collaborate with DEI facilitators to tailor workshops and discussions to your organization's unique needs and challenges.

  7. Leadership Involvement: Have CHROs, CEOs, and ERG leaders actively participate in DEI sessions. Their engagement demonstrates commitment. Long-Term Engagement: DEI facilitation isn't a one-time event; it's an ongoing process. Invest in a series of sessions to create lasting change.

  8. Feedback Loops: Encourage honest feedback from participants after DEI sessions. This helps refine approaches and address concerns.

“Iris Americas had an informative and interactive session with Sarah A. Scala, M. Ed / OD, PCC, who facilitated an excellent open dialogue on the topic of Psychological safety, Diversity, Equity, and inclusion in the workplace. While the topic was inviting to discuss, Sarah brought value, personality, and real-life examples which encouraged organic participation and full engagement from my employees. I highly recommend Sarah as she is relatable to all groups of people, at all levels, as a natural educator. I can not wait to invite Sarah back for a future session with Iris.”
